The Effect of Self-Efficacy and Problem Solving Capacity on Rehabilitation Outcomes in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-efficacy and problem solving capacity had a positive impact on rehabilitation outcomes(interpersonal relationship skill, daily living skill, and symptoms) in patients with schizophrenia.
Methods: The subjects consisted of 390 patients with schizophrenia who were attending 25 psychosocial rehabilitation centers. Data was analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs.
Results: Self-efficacy showed a direct effect on problem solving capacity in patients with schizophrenia. Self-efficacy and problem solving capacity showed a direct effect on functioning(interpersonal relationship skill and daily living skill) and symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusion: These results suggest that function can be increased and symptoms can be decreased in patients with schizophrenia by increasing self-efficacy and problem solving capacity. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that emphasizes increasing self-efficacy and problem solving capacity in order to increase function and decrease symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
